ECM 2020 seeks to fulfill this need by offering a completely digital (online) method for running a scientific conference. ECM 2020 will allow its participants to share their latest research results and receive near-instantaneous feedback from microbiology researchers throughout the world through online question and answer sessions and discussion groups. In this way, ECM 2020 will serve as a platform for advancing the state-of-the-art in microbiology. There is no cost to participate in ECCS 2020.
All submitted abstracts will be evaluated by the conference committee. Upon acceptance of their abstract, authors will contribute an extended abstract for the conference proceedings and a slide presentation of their work. The authors of the most outstanding contributions will be invited to submit a full manuscript for potential publication in Microorganisms (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/microorganisms).

Polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) are a group of Cu-containing enzymes distributed from bacteria to humans, exhibiting two activities, catechol oxidase and tyrosinase. However, their precise mechanism of action and the structural elements that determine the distinction between the two activities are yet to be fully understood. In nature, PPOs catalyse the oxidation of several phenols to o-quinones, considerably affecting colour, flavour, nutritional properties, shelf life and therefore market values of numerous vegetables and fruits. On the other hand, PPOs have been widely employed as biocatalysts in many reactions, with a vast spectrum of applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. One of the most important although least studied application of PPOs is as sensitive detectors of phenol derivatives in polluted waters as well as efficient tools towards biodegradation of these substances. In a previous work, the use of a PPO from the thermophilic fungus Thermothelomyces thermophila (TtPPO), for the degradation of chlorophenols (CPs), contagious by-products of various pesticides, was presented and evaluated. Based on a homology model and available literature on PPO structure-function relations, point mutations were designed, that led to TtPPO variants with altered activity. In order to shed light on the structure-function relations of TtPPO, we solved the structure of specific TtPPO mutant (G292N) (PDB code 6Z1S). Unfortunately, subsequent efforts to determine TtPPO structure in complex with various ligands or substrate analogues have not been yet successful. The present work attempts to shed light on the structural determinants of TtPPO function, by performing protein-ligand docking experiments via YASARA software. The docking results are compared with the biochemical data, and the role of specific aminoacids in TtPPO function is discussed. Observations concerning the binding of the different substrates to the active site of the enzyme, i.e the identification of the amino acids involved in this process, extracted form high-resolution structural models, would allow for structure-based design and production of a more potent biocatalyst for the bioremediation of CPs, providing an economic, effective and sustainable tool for wastewater treatment. |

Introduction. Cervical cancer is an important health issue worldwide. Many factors are related to this condition as persistent human papillomavirus infection, the use of hormonal contraceptives, pH changes, and bacterial vaginosis. The association between the microbiota and cervical cancer is an interesting issue; given that environmental and hormonal factors changing the vaginal microbiota may contribute to cancer. Methods Using High-throughput DNA sequencing of V3-16S rDNA libraries, we determined the bacterial diversity in cervicovaginal lavages and fecal samples at different stages of cervical cancer development in the K14HPV16E7 mice model under +/- 17β-estradiol (E2) stimulus and compared it with an isogenic control (FVB). Results. We found that continuous E2 administration during 6 months in the model with type 16 E7 expression causing the development of cancer, is associated with significant changes in the microbiota diversity in the cervicovaginal lavages. Similar results were not observed in the model when no E2 was administered neither in the FVB mice. Comparable changes in the microbiota diversity of fecal samples were not observed. Conclusions. The persistent expression of E7 oncogene or the 17β-estradiol for longer periods of time, cause changes in the vaginal microbiota diversity and the cervical epithelium not necessarily leading to cervical cancer; however, the combined action of both, causes cervical carcinoma and defined changes in the abundance of bacterial taxa in the cervicovaginal lavages, suggesting a specific organ effect of E7 expression associated to E2 on the vaginal microbiota. Carbapenem-resistant (CR) Gram-negative bacilli, including Enterobacteriaceae and the non-fermenters, represent the most notorious pathogens due to the high incidence of morbidity and mortality, especiallyin immunocompromised patients in intensive care units. Carbapenem resistance is mainly associated with the production of carbapenemases,which are β-lactamases belonging to different Ambler classes (A, B, D) that can be encoded by both chromosomal and plasmid-mediated genes. These enzymes represent the most potent β-lactamases, hydrolyzing a widevariety of β-lactams, including carbapenems, cephalosporins, penicillin, and aztreonam. The major issues associated with carbapenemases production are both clinical, posing significant challenges in the treatment of healthcare-associated infections by compromising the activity of the last-resort antibiotics, and epidemiological, due to their dissemination across almost all geographic regions. An important advancement is a handful of recently launched new antibiotics targeting some of the current most problematic Gram-negative pathogens, namely carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). The most appropriate antimicrobial therapy to treat CRE infections is still controversial. Combination therapy is preferred over monotherapy due to its broad-spectrum coverage, synergic activity, and low probability of selectingfor resistance. In this mini-review, current and future promising antibiotics that are currently under investigation for winning the war against the emerging CRE are discussed. |

The enterobacteria that produce β-lactamases are the main focus of infections in the healthcare environment. This is due to the difficulty they present in terms of treatment, their ease of transmission, and the impact they represent at the economic and personal level. The bacteria of greatest clinical relevance are those with resistance to third and fourth generation cephalosporins, extended spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC. Currently, carbapenemics are one of the few antimicrobials effective against multi-drug resistant organisms. However, the emergence of carbapenem-resistant enterobacteria has increased health concerns. These microorganisms include K. pneumoniae, a pan-resistant bacteria with high morbidity and mortality rates in public health facilities. In this work we have carried out a review on the antimicrobial resistance genes found in its genome, as well as the resistance mechanisms involved. Finally, we will focus on the main outbreaks causing nosocomial infections during the last years. |

Introduction. In previous studies, it has been observed that the concentration of some components of breast milk such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids among others vary throughout the day. In the same way, it has been observed that bacteria diversity undergoes changes at the same time interval. In human milk there are also beneficial bacteria from the mother that are transferred to the newborn by breastfeeding, being the main source of colonizing bacteria of the newborn's gastrointestinal tract. Many of these bacterial communities display oscillations throughout the day, contributing to homeostasis and play an important role in various physiological processes. It is reported that the healthy human microbiome is regulated by the circadian cycle, where fluctuations in abundance of the bacterial community occur, in addition to a relationship in feeding times and sleep cycles of the mother. The aim of this work was to identify possible fluctuations and variations in bacterial diversity and composition on human milk throughout the day. Methods Human milk samples were collected during 5 consecutive days from Monday to Friday at three different times, approximately every 8 hours: Morning (7:00 am), Afternoon (3:00 pm), and night (10:00 pm). Samples were manually collected in aseptic conditions and immediately freeze at -20° C. Bacterial DNA was extracted using the Favorgen stool kit. The diversity was characterized by high-throughput DNA sequencing of V3-16S rDNA libraries. The sequencing data were analyzed using the QIIME pipeline and taxonomy was assigned by comparison of the sequences against the Greengenes reference database. Alpha diversity was determined using Phyloseq and ggplot2 packages in the R environment (v3.4.4). For beta diversity, the dissimilarity was estimated using unweighted Bray Curtis analysis. The linear discriminant analysis effect size program (LEfSe v1.0) was used to detect significant differences in the relative abundances of bacterial taxa. Results. The human milk microbiota shows changes in the bacterial composition between morning and night; also, we observed significant changes in the Shannon diversity index between both groups. On the other hand, no differences were observed in the bacterial composition or alfa diversity in the afternoon samples compared with the morning and night samples. For beta diversity analysis, no clustering was observed among all the samples. As previously has been reported, Lactobacillus was found more enriched in the night milk of samples with statistical significance; same was observed for environmental proteobacteria and actinobacteria. The family Micrococcaceae was detected as more abundant in samples collected in the morning. Conclusions. As for other human milk components, the human milk microbiota seems to be affected by the daytime changes. The results presented in this work suggest that the milk microbiota exhibits diurnal fluctuation resulting in a time-of-day specific taxonomic arrangement. Acknowledgments. - Scholars interested in participating with the conference can submit their abstract (about 200–250 words covering the areas of manuscripts for the proceedings issue) online at this website up to 20 September 2020.
- The Conference Committee will conduct a pre-evaluation, based on the submitted abstract, of whether the contribution from the authors of the abstract will be welcome for the 1st International Electronic Conference on Microbiology. All authors will be notified by 30 September 2020 about the acceptance of their abstract.
- If the abstract is accepted for this conference, the author is asked to submit the manuscript optionally along with a PowerPoint and/or video presentation of his/her paper (only PDF), up to the submission deadline of 10 October 2020.
- The conference proceedings papers and presentations will be available at https://ecm2020.sciforum.net/for discussion during the time of the conference, 2–30 November 2020, and will be published in Journal Proceedings.
- The open access journal Microorganisms will publish a Special Issue of the conference and accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the conference itself. Manuscripts should be prepared in MS Word or any other word processor and should be converted to PDF format before submission. The publication format will be PDF. The manuscript should be at least 3 pages (incl. figures, tables, and references) and should not exceed 6 pages.
Presentation Slides
Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the manuscript. Slides, if available, will be displayed directly in the website using the proprietary slides viewer at Sciforum.net. Slides can be prepared in exactly the same way as for any traditional conference where research results can be presented. Slides should be converted to PDF format before submission so that we can easily and automatically process them for online display.
Video Presentations
Besides their active participation within the forum, authors are also encouraged to submit video presentations. The video should be no longer than 20 minutes and be prepared in one of the following formats:

Authors that wish to present only a poster, i.e., without a proceedings paper, can do so in section I. Posters will be available on the conference website during and after the event. Accepted File Formats
- MS Word: Manuscript prepared in MS Word must be converted into a single file before submission. When preparing manuscripts in MS Word, the 1st International Electronic Conference on Microbiology Microsoft Word template file (see download below) must be used. Please do not insert any graphics (schemes, figures, etc.) into a movable frame which can superimpose the text and make layout very difficult.
- LaTeX: Manuscripts prepared in LaTeX must be collated into one ZIP folder (include all source files and images so that the Conference Secretariat can recompile the submitted PDF). When preparing manuscripts in LaTeX, please use the 1st International Electronic Conference on Microbiology LaTeX template files.

Manuscript Preparation
- Paper Format: A4 paper format, the printing area is 17.5 cm × 26.2 cm. The margins should be 1.75 cm on each side of the paper (top, bottom, left, and right sides).
- Paper Length: The conference proceedings paper should not be longer than 6 pages. The conference manuscript should be as concise as possible.
- Formatting/Style: The paper style of the journal Proceedings should be followed. You may download the template file to prepare your paper (see above). The full titles of the cited papers must be given. Reference numbers should be placed in square brackets [ ], and placed before punctuation; for example [4] or [1–3], and all the references should be listed separately and as the last section at the end of the manuscript.
- Authors List and Affiliation Format: Authors’ full first and last names must be given. Abbreviated middle name(s) can be added. For papers written by various contributors, a corresponding author must be designated. The PubMed/MEDLINE format is used for affiliations: complete street address information including city, zip code, state/province, country, and email address should be added. All authors who contributed significantly to the manuscript (including writing a section) should be listed on the first page of the manuscript, below the title of the article. Other parties who provided only minor contributions should only be listed under Acknowledgments. A minor contribution might be a discussion with the author, reading through the draft of the manuscript, or performing English corrections.
- Figures, Schemes, and Tables: Authors are encouraged to prepare figures and schemes in color. Full color graphics will be published free of charge. Figure and schemes must be numbered (Figure 1, Scheme I, Figure 2, Scheme II, etc.) and an explanatory title must be added. Tables should be inserted into the main text, and numbers and titles for all tables supplied. All table columns should have an explanatory heading. Please supply legends for all figures, schemes, and tables. The legends should be prepared as a separate paragraph of the main text and placed in the main text before a table, figure, or scheme.
Potential Conflicts of Interest
It is the authors’ responsibility to identify and declare any personal circumstances or interests that may be perceived as inappropriately influencing the representation or interpretation of clinical research. If there is no conflict, please state here “The authors declare no conflict of interest”. This should be conveyed in a separate “Conflict of Interest” statement preceding the “Acknowledgments” and “References” sections at the end of the manuscript. Financial support for the study must be fully disclosed under the “Acknowledgments” section.
